Electrician

Electricians install and maintain wiring in homes and businesses. Electricians are familiar with blueprints that locate circuit boards and outlets in order to repair or run electrical wiring. Knowledge of a variety of equipment is involved in the work, including tools, fuse boxes, and more difficult operations that have generators or transformers.

Electricians consist of four groups:

1. Residential Wiremen (wiring for homes)
2. Inside Wiremen (wiring for office buildings, airports, schools, commercial installations)
3. Telecommunications (cable, phone, computer)
4. Outside Linemen (wiring from powerplants to buildings and homes)

• A high school degree or equivalent is required
• Pre-apprenticeship training at a trade school or vocational college
• Licensure by the state

Electricians often are members of a national or local union that provide many benefits.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth in this career is expected to increase by 10% between 2018 and 2028.
